Remote tow bar coding after installation

A tow bar fitted without coding means a trailer light that stays off, parking sensors screaming at every manoeuvre and an ESP that ignores the trailer. Coding registers the module with the vehicle and enables everything that goes with it. We do it remotely, once the wiring is in.

What the coding covers

The trailer module is added to the list of installed control units in the gateway, then coded for your vehicle. Related functions are enabled in the relevant control units: trailer light monitoring, parking sensor muting when a trailer is connected, trailer stabilisation by the ESP, and the trailer menu on screen where it exists.

On a genuine manufacturer tow bar fitted after delivery, an SVM validation with the VAG servers is often required for the configuration to be recognised permanently. It is included in the job when needed.

Genuine or aftermarket tow bar

Both can be coded. A universal 7 or 13-pin harness with a dedicated module works, but some functions such as trailer manoeuvring assist or the on-screen display only exist with the genuine module. State your harness reference in the request.

What you need

  • The tow bar and its harness fitted and connected
  • The module or kit reference (invoice or manual)
  • A Windows laptop with TeamViewer or AnyDesk and a VNCI or VAS 6154A interface
  • A trailer or a socket tester for the final check, if possible

On recent models protected by SFD (Golf 8, Octavia 4, Leon 4, A3 8Y, Formentor…), the activation goes through an authenticated unlock with the manufacturer. Our technicians perform it during the session; the quote reflects it.

Understanding SFD

Frequently asked questions

My garage fitted the tow bar but the trailer lights do not work.
That is the typical uncoded tow bar. The harness is fine, the vehicle simply does not know a trailer module is present. A coding session fixes it without going back to the workshop.
Is the SVM code mandatory?
Not always. It is on most genuine tow bars and on recent models, where the configuration is checked online. We determine it from your VIN and include it in the quote.
How long does the session take?
Between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the number of control units to code and whether an SVM is needed.

Check feasibility on your vehicle

Enter your VIN: we read the exact version of your control units, and your request arrives pre-filled with this feature.

A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q.
